Getting started
Do I need experience to start?
No. Everyone starts as a white belt, and everyone has a first class. We teach every skill from the beginning, so you can walk in with zero experience.
What happens at the free trial class?
You arrive a few minutes early, meet an instructor, and join a real class at your child’s level (or yours). There is no sales pitch and no pressure. Afterward we will explain our program, answer your questions, present you with our program options, and you decide if it’s a fit.
Is the first class really free?
Yes. The first class is free, with no contract and no obligation.
What should we wear to the first class?
Comfortable clothes you can move in. A uniform is not needed for your first class. We’ll go over uniforms if you decide to continue.
Do we wear shoes?
Students train barefoot on our mats. Please bring a clean pair of socks or sandals for walking to the restroom if you like.
How early should we arrive?
About 10 minutes early for the first class. That gives us time to say hello and get your child comfortable.
How do I book?
Pick a class time on our free trial page, or Call or text us at 507-782-8511 and we’ll help you.
Kids and parents
What ages do you teach?
Little Dragons is for ages 4 to 7, Karate Kids is for ages 8 to teen, and Teens & Adults is for ages 13 and up. Our Family Class welcomes ages 8 through adult so parents and kids can train side by side.
Will martial arts make my child violent?
The opposite. Martial arts teaches self-control, respect and when not to fight. Students learn courtesy, discipline and confidence, and they practice using their skills responsibly. Most parents see calmer, more focused kids.
My child is shy. Will they be okay?
Very often, yes. Small classes mean your child isn’t lost in a crowd, and instructors know every student by name. Shy kids usually warm up quickly, because everyone is learning together and cheering each other on. For very shy children, or children who struggle in social settings, we generally see them watch the first class, and participate during the second. For children with special needs or social anxiety that make group activity very challenging, we can arrange a one on one introduction and lesson, and build a plan to work into regular classes.
My child has a lot of energy. Is that a problem?
It’s a strength. Structured class time gives high-energy kids a place to move, focus and listen. Learning to channel that energy is a big part of what we teach.
My child has ADHD, anxiety or other needs. Can they join?
Many families find martial arts helpful for focus and confidence. Tell us a little about your child and we’ll talk about how to set them up for success. Call or text us at 507-782-8511.
Can I watch the class?
Parents are encouraged to remain involved in their students journey, so we prefer it if you do! For students ages 7 and under, a parent is required to remain for the duration of class. If you’d like to watch a class before the trial, please call or text us at 507-782-8511 to coordinate. We’re happy to talk through what works best for your child.
Should I stay for the first class?
Yes. We want you to fully understand what you’re signing up for. How class flows, and how your student interacts with the team.
Can parents train too?
Yes. Our Family Class welcomes ages 8 through adult, and our Teens & Adults classes are open to beginners. Training together is a great family activity.
How is martial arts different from other kids’ activities?
It builds focus, respect, goal-setting and resilience, on top of fitness. Students earn belts one step at a time, so they learn that effort leads to progress.
Classes and progress
How many days a week should we come?
We recommend two days a week. That’s the sweet spot for steady progress without burning out.
How long are classes?
Class lengths vary by program, but are generally 30 or 45 min sessions. Call or text us at 507-782-8511 or check the schedule when you book and we’ll point you to the right class.
How big are the classes?
Small. Most classes are under 10 students. Small class size is one of the things we’re proudest of, because it means more individual attention for every student.
How do belts work?
Everyone starts as a white belt and moves up through colored belts as they learn and practice. Students are invited to test when they’re ready, and belt promotions are celebrated with the whole class.
How long does it take to earn a black belt?
It depends on the student and how consistently they train. Black belt is a multi-year journey, and the progress along the way is what matters. We celebrate every step.
Is it safe?
Safety comes first. Classes are small and closely supervised, techniques are taught step by step, and students use protective gear when they practice partner drills. Instructors keep contact controlled and age-appropriate.
What if my child misses a class?
That happens, and it’s fine. We encourage you to make up the missed class by attending another session the same week.
Do you do tournaments?
Our students can compete in tournaments and testing events when they’re ready, but it’s always optional. Many students just train for fitness, confidence and fun.
Cost and membership
How much does it cost?
Month-to-month memberships start at $99, billed as $49.50 every two weeks. Call or text us at 507-782-8511 for details on the program that fits your family.
Is there a contract?
No long-term contract is required. 1 Year and Month-to-month plans are available, so you can stay as long as it works for you.
Can I pause my membership?
Yes. You can hold a membership for up to 90 days once a year.
Do you offer family discounts?
Please call or text us at 507-782-8511 and we’ll go over family options.
Are there extra costs, like uniforms or testing fees?
We’ll go over any uniform and belt-testing costs with you before you decide, so there are no surprises. Call or text us at 507-782-8511 if you’d like to ask now.
Adults
I’m an adult and out of shape. Can I still do this?
Yes. You go at your own pace. Many adult students start with little fitness or flexibility, and they build strength, stamina and confidence over time.
Am I too old to start?
No. We have students of all ages. Our Teens & Adults program welcomes beginners and experienced martial artists alike.
Is this a good workout?
Yes. Classes build cardio, strength, balance and flexibility, and most people find it more fun than a gym.
Will I have to spar?
Not unless and until you’re ready. You learn skills step by step, and partner work is introduced gradually with protective gear.
